Sümela Monastery, also known as the Meryem Ana Monastery (Monastery of the Virgin Mary), has a rich history dating back to the 4th century. 
 
Initially founded during the reign of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, the monastery gained prominence during the Byzantine era. The existing structures, however, predominantly date from the 13th century.
 

The complex is carved into the rock face of a steep cliff, creating a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. Visitors can explore the main courtyard, the Rock Church, the chapels, and the kitchen, each revealing intricate frescoes, religious icons, and architectural details that showcase the craftsmanship of Byzantine artisans.
