of Europe<\/span> (after El P\u00f3pulo in Cadiz), there stands a living testament to the city&#8217;s enduring history.<\/p><p>Nestled amidst the labyrinthine alleys and charming squares of Alfama, this ancient dwelling from 16<sup>th<\/sup> century is one of -if not the oldest- houses in Lisbon.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b94783 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7b94783\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It drew my attention standing out with its adorable size and understated simplicity from the rest of the characteristic bustling landscape of Lisbon in one of my earliest discovery strolls in Alfama.<\/p><p>I could not quite understand the feeling at that time, as I did not know how special it was for the history and architecture of the city, but it certainly managed to evoke a sense of nostalgia inside of me, giving a serenity in a rapidly changing class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As for the features of the house that stand out in the first place:<\/p><p>A 17<sup>th<\/sup> century style panel of tiles placed in 20<sup>th<\/sup> century onto the fa\u00e7ade of the house, depicts a monstrance, an allusion to the Eucharist, flanked by two angels. This structure gives larger living space to the inhabitants of the house while at the same time leaving the narrow streets walkable.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>This quincentennial house survived the catastrophic earthquake and subsequent tsunami<\/strong><\/span> <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">that tore down most of Lisbon in 1755<\/span> <\/strong>which is thought to be thanks to its solid rock pillars and elevation. some of them.<\/p><p>Such as this one, <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>another 16<sup>th<\/sup> century house just a few meters away<\/strong><\/span> from the aforementioned one, located
