land. So, the monks decide to relocate the bones and skulls in the burial areas associated with the convent.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-b9876b3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b9876b3\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-54720ed\" data-id=\"54720ed\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da6265f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da6265f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But rather than burying them behind the closed doors, <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>the Franciscan monks who were concerned about the increasing materialism of the society in \u00c9vora<\/strong><\/span>, which was a town notable for its wealth in the early beginning of the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century, decided to use them in a more purposeful way. Hence the Chapel of Bones, where all those bones and skulls were put on display, was built.<\/p><p><strong>B<\/strong><b>y doing this, the monks sought to create a place of reflection on the transience of material things in the undeniable presence of death<\/b>.<\/p><p>To give food for thought to the visitors, <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a message from those inside was inscribed above the chapel entrance<\/span><\/strong>:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cff82bd #000000;\">San Bernardino alla Ossa of Milan, Italy<\/span><\/strong>. King Joao V was so affected by the sight of it that he decided to build the same in \u00c9vora.<\/p><p>Today when you visit, you\u2019ll see two corpses on display in glass containers, one once belonged to a child. Fernando the King<\/strong><\/span> and later <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Nuno \u00c1lvares Pereira<\/strong><\/span> (the famous general who founded the Carmo Convent where his tomb was lost during 1755 Earthquake.) who resided there for 25 years.\n\nAfter subsequent handovers from Castro family where it descends to the D. Fernando de Castro (1st Count of Basto), the premises have been purchased by <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Eug\u00e9nio de Almeida<\/strong><\/span> family who still owns and uses as the headquarters of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fea.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Eug\u00e9nio de Almeida rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b> Eug\u00e9nio de Almeida Foundation<\/b><\/span><\/a>, is actually <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>one of the most valuable visits you can do if you want to learn a lot about evolution of \u00c9vora and Alentejo region<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fea.pt\/a-fundacao\/fundador-e-historia\/familia-eugenio-de-almeida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Eug\u00e9nio de Almeida family<\/strong><\/a><\/span> has been one of the most powerful and influential families of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century in Portugal, notable for the public services and the entrepreneurial work they carried on for over four A beautiful blend of various architectural styles, the Cathedral seems like it whispers all the history that it witnessed. While Romanesque style is evident in its imposing exterior with fortress-like walls, Gothic elements welcome us as we move in; especially the main gate that was elaborately adorned with apostle statues and rib-vaulted ceilings; and the Sun Gate with gothic arches.<\/p><p>When you enter, you&#8217;ll immediately note the vast nave and side chapels leading you to a gilded woodwork altarpiece at the main chapel that hosts a beautiful organ of tubes from the Renaissance period. At your first sight, you&#8217;ll immediately notice few prominent figures on this granite work of art:<\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>The four figures seated on the sides of the pediment, holding spears: The Atlanteans<\/b>; people of the mythical island that sank in the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Local people call them &#8220;<strong>Os Meninos de Gra\u00e7a&#8221;<\/strong> <em>(&#8220;The Boys of Gra\u00e7a\/Grace&#8221;) <\/em>and they are very well-known among Eborenses. Which means, if you mention about them even if it is to ask for directions, the Eborenses will immediately understand.<\/p><ul><li>The Atlanteans are supported on four <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>globes with fire atop:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span> These represent <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>\u201cthe four parts of the world\u201d, through which the Portuguese discoverers passed<\/b>. It is a reference to the rich navigation tradition of Portugal.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>With the extinction of religious orders in 1834, Gra\u00e7a Convent was transformed into barracks hence beginning to decay. Eventually, it lost a significant part. This has been valid ever since it was constructed almost 5 centuries ago.<\/p><p>The Pra\u00e7a do Giraldo (Giraldo Square) is a tribute to the <strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Geraldo Geraldes,<\/span><\/strong> &#8220;O Sem Pavor&#8221; (The Fearless) who conquered \u00c9vora from the Moors in 12th century. It features a crown on top and 8 faces around the fountain which symbolise 8 main streets that lead to Giraldo Square.<\/p><p>The best way to enjoy the Square, after taking a look around at the details that it hosts, is to get a cup of coffee and chill at one of the terrace of caf\u00e9s around. (<strong><a href=\"#miguelarruda\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Miguel Arruda<\/span><\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s father. Remember him from the Igreja da Gra\u00e7a section above? Sadly the aqueduct has undergone some changes throughout the history and lost a significant part. Yet today, we can still note some of those traces.<\/p><p><span lang=\"en\">For example, next to the Church of S\u00e3o Francisco, there was until 1873 the Royal Closure of the Aqueduct, a Renaissance portico composed of \u201can octagonal turret&#8221;. Also in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"#pra\u00e7adogiraldo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pra\u00e7a do Giraldo<\/a><span lang=\"en\">, where the aqueduct ended, there was a fountain \u201cadorned by marble lions\u201d and a Roman triumphal arch. You can still see the Tuscan columns a built. Without all sides visible, you can still see it today with twelve Tuscan columns and a wide entablature.<br \/><\/span><\/p><p>You can embark on a little expedition by seeking the hints of the original structure if you want\u00a0 a different feeling than what you get from a typical touristic trip.<\/p><p>One of the best ways to discover the Aqueduct is the Ecopist of Aqueduct (see section <b><a href=\"#environmentalpathevora\">&#8216;Environmental Routes of \u00c9vora&#8221;<\/a><\/b> below) where you can cycle or walk through cork oaks and farmlands. For a shorter route, you can use the Porta da Lagoa gate. From <b>Algarve or Porto<\/b>, however, there are no direct trains or buses as they will <b>require a transfer in Lisbon, making the duration of the trip go up to 5-6 hours or so<\/b>. So the fastest option will be limited to transportation by car.<\/p><p>Note that the times above may depend on the traffic and daily conditions such as availability in the public transportation. So, if you came by car, I suggest that you park it outside the city ramparts, at allotted parking spaces. Considering entangled and sometimes quite narrow streets of \u00c9vora, a car within the city may be a big challenge to deal with.<\/p><p>I leave herein below a little map that may help with finding paid and free parking lots.
