The Oldest House in Lisbon that Survived
the Great Earthquake of 1755
In the heart of Alfama, the enchanting neighbourhood that wears the crown of being the second oldest in all of Europe (after El Pópulo in Cadiz), there stands a living testament to the city’s enduring history.
Nestled amidst the labyrinthine alleys and charming squares of Alfama, this ancient dwelling from 16th century is one of -if not the oldest- houses in Lisbon.
It drew my attention standing out with its adorable size and understated simplicity from the rest of the characteristic bustling landscape of Lisbon in one of my earliest discovery strolls in Alfama.
I could not quite understand the feeling at that time, as I did not know how special it was for the history and architecture of the city, but it certainly managed to evoke a sense of nostalgia inside of me, giving a serenity in a rapidly changing world.
As for the features of the house that stand out in the first place:
A 17th century style panel of tiles placed in 20th century onto the façade of the house, depicts a monstrance, an allusion to the Eucharist, flanked by two angels. Its weathered façade and centuries-old architecture serve as a poignant reminder of a time long before modernity touched these cobblestone streets.

The overhang of the second floor is a characteristic feature of the medieval houses. This structure gives larger living space to the inhabitants of the house while at the same time leaving the narrow streets walkable.
This quincentennial house survived the catastrophic earthquake and subsequent tsunami that tore down most of Lisbon in 1755 which is thought to be thanks to its solid rock pillars and elevation. (and of course the good care by its owners).
Unfortunately there are only a few buildings with this prominence left in Lisbon after the disaster but if you be attentive, you can notice some of them.
Such as this one, another 16th century house just a few meters away from the aforementioned one, located across the Church of Menino Deus.
And this one below that is located at the Beco da Achada.
If you want to visit this venerable abode of Alfama, you can find it in Rua dos Cegos, next to the street and stairs of São Tomé, softly whispering tunes from a more graceful time to those who are ready to listen; those who like to find beauty in life’s little pleasures.
