The Metropolitan Region of Lisbon, also known as the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, AML), is a large metropolitan region that encompasses the city of Lisbon and 17 surrounding municipalities.
Aside from the Lisbon city, other municipalities such as Ericeira, Mafra, Setúbal, and Sintra belong to this metropolitan area.
In contrast, Lisbon as a city is the capital of Portugal and functions as a single municipality within the larger metropolitan region which is also called “Lisbon”
